Angelica Contreras had Juvenile Huntington's Disease and had to undergo many treatments hoping for a cure. Through it all she was couragious and an inspiration to us all. She was such a "miracle girl. "

A Life Remembered 1/4/09

Valley woman yearned for peace from tired body

After years of battling the physical and emotional changes in her body, Angelica Contreras wanted peace.

Although she could no longer speak or write, Angelica was still able to answer her grandmother when asked if she was tired of the struggle. Her family had worked out a system to ask her questions. One finger raised meant, "yes." Two meant "no."

Angelica made it clear. "She was ready to go to heaven," Connie Contreras said.

Angelica Monique Verala Contreras died Nov. 14. The Phoenix resident was 20.

It was the end of a long fight. Her problems started when she was in seventh grade. The vibrant, active young girl had become clingy, anxious about leaving her mother's side.

"I had moved her from a public to a private school, and I thought she was having trouble adjusting," her mother, Noreen said. "She would cry, not wanting to go."

After going to counseling, the nervousness slowly dissipated. Angelica, the girl who loved to read, dote on her younger sister and work on her ever-expanding Elvis collection, seemed back to her old self.

She was excited to start her freshman year at Bourgade Catholic High School, quickly joining various clubs.

"But all of a sudden, the change came again," Contreras said. When family members would drive her to school, she would get out, but then turn to chase them as they drove away.

Doctors said she was manic depressive and prescribed medicine to treat an emotional disorder.

But a phone call from her father, Michael Varela, in 2005, painted an even darker future for Angelica. He had just been diagnosed with Huntington's disease, a genetic neurological disorder that leads to degeneration of the body's functions.

Angelica was frightened at the prospect that she might have inherited Huntington's. But when doctors confirmed her fears in late 2005, "she actually relaxed," her mother said. She set out to make her final dreams come true.

"She wanted to go to Graceland," Noreen said. "She wanted to see where Elvis lived."

Her grandparents had ignited Angelica's passion for the King when she was about 7. Richard Contreras would dance with her in his arms to Elvis records. Her favorite song? Love Me Tender. Over the years, she decorated nearly every empty spot of her bedroom with Elvis memorabilia.

With help from the Contrerases' church, family, friends and donations by Swift Transportation Corp. in Phoenix, money was raised to help pay for Angelica's trip in July 2007 to Memphis, Tenn.

"She was so excited," Noreen said. "Her face was the happiest I had ever seen it."

In the weeks that followed, memories of the trip eased painful days.

"I think it really helped," her mother said. Using blocks to spell out words, Angelica told her mother that she wasn't afraid to die.

To help boost her spirits, Paul Spoonmore, an Elvis impersonator in the Valley who had given her a benefit concert, made frequent visits. He had become like a member of the family.

He was there by her bed at the hospice, holding her hand, that last day. "I was singing There Will be Peace in the Valley," Spoonmore said. "She took a final breath and was gone."

Angelica Update 11/14/08

This info was from 9:00pm Thursday night- Paul texted me and told me what the night nurse told Noreen and the family. The nurse said with Angelica body signs, she thinks Angelica may have about another 24 hours. She did say that with younger patients this can vary, but Angelica's time is very close. I spoke with Noreen this morning and Angelica has been fevering and her heart rate was elevated, but she is now resting peacefully and Noreen thinks her time is very close.

Angelica Update 11/13/08

Hello everyone,

More on Wednesday 11-12, The early morning of Wednesday Angelica was wheezing and choking a bit. But by late morning to evening, Angelica was resting peacefully. They had upped her medicine so she was comfortable and Angelica is now no longer able to respond when people come over to her. Her breathing is heavy and her heart rate is up when I left.

Thursday 11-13, Angelica had a ruff night again, for some reason the nights seem to be harder on her. She was having difficulty breathing but she is now resting peacefully this morning. Angelica's spirit is so very strong for her to continue to endure this disease. Please continue to pray for peace and comfort.

You are welcome to go to the center to see Angelica. Please go to Angelica's prayer book today and leave messages of peace, strength and love for Angelica and her family.... We are aware that the prayer book is coming up error for some people. This was a free program we used when the site was set up, so changing it now would loose all of Angelica's previous prayers. I'm asking you to type your prayer in Microsoft Word then copy & paste it to the prayer book so you don't have to keep retyping. Just keep trying. Thanks (you may also send your prayers to webmaster@saintjerome.org and we will make sure that Angelica gets them)

Please pray for peace and comfort for Angelica and strength and peace for Noreen and the rest of the family.

We wanted to Thank You all for your prayers and support to the Contreras family, through Angelica's fight with this terrible Huntington's Disease.

God Bless and with love,
Angelica's Committee (Tracey and others)

Angelica Update 11/12/08

Wednesday 11-12, Angelica's uncle Michael called at 1:30am and said Angelica had taken a turn for the worst. Her lungs are filling up with fluid, her breathing is labored and she is moaning and crying. Please pray for peace for Angelica and they she can go to sleep and pass with peace.

Angelica Update 11/9-11/08

Monday 11-10, Angelica is heavily sedated and has been resting peacefully since yesterday afternoon. She can hear everything that is going on in her room and opens her eyes every so often and wants a sip of water.

Tuesday 11-11, Angelica had a sad night. She was moaning and crying so they upped her medicine so she would not be in pain. Monday evening Angelica has been responding by opening her eyes when people come into the room and talk to her, but most of the time she is sleeping. The pain medicine is guess work at this point, so Angelica is being watched closely to be sure she is most comfortable. Her muscles are very relaxed this morning and she is still asking for water every so often. This is a great relief for Angelica that she is not all tightened up, and it is giving much peace to Noreen and the family. Thank you God!

Thank you to everyone for all your prayers and the people that have brought food to the Hospices center for the family. This has been a great help! If anyone else would like to help with food please call Tracey@ 602-799-9439 and let me know what meal you are bringing and on what day, so they don't have to worry about food. Please be praying for little Vanessa, she's only 4 and doesn't understand what's going on...

You are welcome to go to the center to see Angelica, however she will be sleeping. Please go to Angelica's prayer book today and leave messages of peace, strength and love for Angelica and her family....

Please pray for peace and comfort for Angelica and strength and peace for Noreen and the rest of the family.

I wanted to Thank You all for your prayers and support to the Contreras family, through Angelica's fight with this terrible Huntington's Disease.

Angelica Update 11/9/08

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask for your continued love, support and prayers for Angelica and her family.

Saturday night (11-8) Angelica was taken to the Hospice center because of violent seizing. Angelica was heavily medicated so her body could rest, but even with this medication, Angelica was restless all night. Angelica's body has been tightening up more and more for about a week now. At this point, Angelica can not release the muscles and she is in pain all the time.

Today-(Sunday 11-9) Angelica's condition has not changed and a decision has been made to keep her sedated to keep her comfortable.
Noreen asked Angelica today, if we should continue to fight for her, and Angelica answered no... We are not sure how long Angelica's fragile body can manage this disease.

You are welcome to go to the center to see Angelica, however she may be sleeping.

Please pray for peace and comfort for Angelica and strength and peace for Noreen and the rest of the family.

I wanted to Thank You all for your prayers and support to me and the Contreras family, through Angelica's fight with this terrible Huntington's Disease.

God Bless,
Tracey Andrews

Angelica Update 10/22/08

Hi everyone,

I hope you all are doing well, it seems like so long since we have see each other. Please be praying for our very strong girl.....

Noreen called me tonight and said Angelica a had to have her feeding tube removed and replaced today. It had been getting blocked and was really starting to look bad. Noreen did not have the information that feeding tube should be replaced once a year and Angelica was put in September 2006, so it was due. The way the hospital takes it out is just by PULLING IT OUT..... Noreen didn't know this, so she was at the end of the bed and both of them were pretty freaked out and Angelica was in pain. They only gave Angelica something to relax her so she was wide awake and fully aware of what had just happened.

Tonight, she is some pain but there has be no bleeding since they have been home, so that is a good sign. Noreen will be able to feed Angelica tonight and hopefully with the new tube she can gain some more weight because she is down to 79 pounds.

Something else that had been happening is, Angelica is falling out of bed. The hospital bed she has does not have the side rails. Noreen has been trying to get a new one for a week or two and not getting very far. I suggested for her to go get one of those bed rails that you just tuck under the mattress until this gets resolved. Hopefully Noreen will go get one tomorrow, because as fragile as Angelica is she could really get hurt if she falls to the ground.

Noreen and the entire family EXCEPT Angelica has been very sick with a range of things from stomach flue, to coughing. They all cleaned really good and did everything so that Angelica wouldn't get it, and they were successful. Good Job guys!

Some good news: Angelica is going to the youth day care center on Mondays & Fridays from 9am to 2pm :) She really likes it! Vanessa goes to preschool during that same time so Noreen will be able to start going to Ceragem and get some care for herself.

If you are able please go by and see Angelica (call first) she misses everyone soooooo much! If anyone can make some dinners for Noreen and Vanessa, that would be a great help. Please make them so they can go into the freezer, if needed.

Please go and sign Angelica prayer book and leave her messages at the house-602-862-1036, she loves getting both! And go see her as often as you can....
I'm going to start encouraging Noreen to get Angelica back to Life Teen nights. This is a great outlet for Angelica's spirit and she loved it!

I hope you are all well and I hear from you soon :)

God Bless,
